Water Exhibition

Stepping into 2020, Hong Kongers’ materially rich life has been turned upside down.  To prevent the virus outbreak, everyone is trapped at home. The only activity that gathers people is lining up to buy masks. This scene is a deja vu of what happened 40-50 years ago, Hong Kong people spent half a day waiting in the streets for just a bucket of water every day during the drought, and every day there were people engaged in fights and robbery for it. Today, the average daily water consumption of Hongkongers reaches 130 litres (global average: 110 litres). It is as if we have forgotten the times when there was no tap water, and we had to struggle with 20 litres of water every day.

Thanks to the donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage (CACHe) was able to launch ‘The Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant – Jockey Club Cultural Heritage Community Integration Scheme’  and curate ‘Water Exhibition’ to track where Hong Kong’s water comes from, revisit the history of river water, well water and running water, in which we can contemplate how Hong Kongers can take hold of this source of life, in the midst of the global battle for resources.
