Opened/ 1928
Business/ Soya Products
Address/ 65 Third Street
Kwan Hing Kee is owned by Mrs. Kwan and her husband. Mrs. Kwan was only nineteen when she started taking care of the shop for her husband. Now she is more than 60 years old and has been providing home-made soya products for the neighbourhood in all weathers, keeping the shop alive since 1928. the business began with Mr. Kwan carrying a pole loaded with tofu products on his shoulder on Centre Street, at that time a vibrant street full of stalls. Later, two workshops making fermented and non-fermented bean curd were established on Second Street before the retail shop was opened on Third Street up to now.
Mrs. Kwan likes to exchange cooking tips with residents in the neighbourhood. She also makes an effort to collect various cooking ingredients and groceries for them, for example, white wine and chili sauce of brands that can rarely be found on the market. Considering that clients are mainly from small families, Mrs. Kwan packages seasonings like fermented black beans and salted plums in small, individual packets for sale. Kwan Hing Kee may be a small grocery specialising in soya products, but it is well equipped for all your Chinese cooking needs.
