Intel brief

In the early period of Qing Dynasty, the Qing government wanted to disconnect Koxinga, the loyalist of the Ming Dynasty, from the coastal residents. All residents living at the coast from Shandong to Guangdong were ordered to migrate 30-50 Chinese miles inland. It was until the 8th year of the Kangxi Reign (1669) that the residents were allowed to return to their places of origin. However, not many were willing to go. The Qing government gave out incentives to attract new settlers to redevelop the abandoned lands. At that time, many people from Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, etc. took the chance to migrate to nowadays Hong Kong. These Hakka (meaning newcomers) people founded villages in Hong Kong and settled down. They communicate in their own dialect, i.e. Hakka dialect.

Nowadays, the Hakka community still conduct major rituals in their own tongue. For instance, the consecration ritual in the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance was done in Hakka dialect.
