有說「八音」是指「金、石、土、革、絲、木、匏、竹」這八種製造樂器的材料，亦有指是以這些材料製成的八種代表性樂器，至今仍未有定論。
以聲音雄壯嘹亮的嗩吶為主，再加上鑼、鼓、鈸等各種敲擊樂器，又或選用不同吹管、彈撥樂器，便可奏出八音。八音是廣東的傳統地方音樂，又名「鑼鼓八音」。在慶典、結婚、粵劇表演、殯儀又或打醮等場合都可聽到八音演奏。不過，現今在慶典、結婚等喜慶場合用作表演助慶的八音已較為罕見，而在粵劇演出、殯儀和打醮場合中則仍處處見其蹤影。

Some say that ‘Eight Categories’ refers to the eight materials for making musical instruments, namely metal, stone, earth, leather, silk, wood, gourd and bamboo. There is also saying suggesting that ‘Eight Categories’ refers to eight types of representing musical instrument made with the above materials. Until now, there is still no conclusion.
Led by the robust and bright suona, the Eight Categories of Instrumental Music can be performed with the accompaniment of various percussion instruments, such as gongs, drums and cymbals, and other wind and string instrument. The Eight Categories of Instrumental Music is a form of traditional music in Guangdong, which is also called ‘Eight Categories of Instrumental Music in Gongs and Drums’. You may hear the performance of this form of music during celebration, wedding, Cantonese opera, Jiao Festival and funeral. In modern days, it is rare to find the Eight Categories of Instrumental Music being played in occasions such as celebration and wedding. It is still common to be performed in Cantonese opera, funeral event and Jiao Festival.

/ 關於非遺專車計劃
本計劃由康樂及文化事務署非物質文化遺產資助計劃資助，非物質文化遺產辦事處主辦，並由長春社文化古蹟資源中心籌劃，非遺專車——「移動．非遺」會駛進全港中小學校園及各個社區，把不同非物質文化遺產（非遺）項目帶到大家身旁。非遺專車內設有展覽及互動設施，同時配有一系列教育及公眾節目，以有趣和互動的方式提升學生與公眾對非遺的認識，並從中學習欣賞和珍惜文化遺產。
