萬隆疋頭的前身是萬隆貿易公司，是做製衣生意的。張先生是生意的第二代，他在70年代末接手製衣廠。在80年代初內地改革開放時期曾回廣州設廠，但很快會發現內地的經營環境並不理想，於是改為做製衣的原材料，即布疋買賣的生意，但在內地的經營情況不利香港人，張先生便於1984年回港再汝州街開設萬隆疋頭公司，成功賺到第一桶金。他們的生意客戶主要是做香港的製衣廠，而衣服的目的地為海外。
在店舖開設時，整條汝州街都是布行為主，而南昌街以東的汝州街更為熱鬧。在80年代，汝州街有一條天光墟，有不少是售賣成衣的，因此在汝州街的唐樓有不少山寨廠，亦吸引了不少布行在汝州街開業。

Man Loon Piece Good Co., Ltd. was formerly known as Man Loon Trading Co., Ltd. which concentrated on the garment business. Mr. Cheung is the 2nd generation. He started to take over the factory in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, China started to reform and open up, Mr. Cheung went there to set up factory in Guangzhou. But soon he found that the business environment in the mainland wasn’t ideal. Mr. Cheung changed his business to producing cloths for the garment industry. However, the business environment in China did not favour Hong Kong investment. Mr. Cheung decided to move back to Hong Kong in 1984 and set up Man Loon Piece Good Co., Ltd. on Yu Chau street. He made his first fortune. His customers were mainly garment factories in Hong Kong which exported products for overseas markets.
When Mr. Cheung’s shop opened, the whole Yu Chau street was selling cloths. The area east of Nam Cheong Street was most populated. In the 1980s, there was a morning market on Yu Chau Street, most stores were selling manufactured fashion. Since there were many cottage industries in the tenement buildings on Yu Chau Street, a lot of cloth shops were attracted to set up business there.
