With maps, we find directions to our destinations. Today, electronic and digital maps are prevalent in our daily life, new facets of the city can be updated instantly. Yet, they have unwittingly concealed the historical traces of this city. Old maps, obsolete as they may seem record, have recorded the transformation of our city like an historical archive. The emergence and development of this city or our ups and downs can all be found on the old maps of Hong Kong.

We are honoured to have the courtesy from collectors, Mr. Cheung Shun Kwong and Mr. Yam Ching Chuen, who generously authorize the use of thirteen old maps from the 1890s to the 1970s for this exhibition. Each map carries invaluable traces of Hong Kong’s development history, such as the development of districts in Hong Kong, the naming of streets, the changes brought about by the epidemic, the evolution of housing types, the relocations of the cemeteries as well as the disappearance of mountain ranges. Modern maps give us directions. Old maps, on the other hand, guide us through Hong Kong’s urban development in different eras.

Embracing Heritage – Jockey Club Community Cultural Heritage Programme

This project is supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage is organizing a series of programmes to promote heritage conservation. This project aims to strengthen public understanding on our history and our community cultural heritage, so that every stakeholder can enjoy and involve in conservation activities that enhance local identity and community cohesion.

The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage

The Conservancy Association Centre for Heritage started service in 2005, dedicated to promote conservation of cultural heritage and to pass on traditions through education. In 2007, the center has received support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to organize a number of educational and community involvement activities, hoping to encourage public participation in cultural conservation work.
