Opened: the 1950s
Business: Hairdressing and Shaving
Address: Rear Block, 36 Western Street
Master Chan and Master Hu, now both aged over 80, came from the same hometown in China. They started a barber shop together on High street in Sai Ying Pun when they were in their twenties, and in the 1980s, they moved their shop to Western Street, where it remained until it was closed. Time flew, and after working together for more than 60 years, Master Chan and Master Hu retired and closed their shop in late August, 2014.
Yau Kee was located on a small lane. A canopy, set up by the masters themselves, stood outside the shop and provided a public space where the neighbours could chat and relax. In the shop, there were two old barber chairs, with the history of over hundred years, and a calfskin belt that was used for sharpening shavers. The traditional hair-cutting tools, the masters' hair-cutting and shaving services that can rarely be found in the market, and the friendly price that was never affected by inflation, made the shop feel like it was frozen in time, reminding people of the old Sai Ying Pun.
